历史上几乎没有任何一个场景能像英国第一波朋克浪潮（First Wave of British Punk）这样如此彻底地改变流行音乐的面貌。这一场景并非凭空创造： 早期的英国朋克音乐从酒吧摇滚（Pub Rock）和车库摇滚（ Garage Rock）中吸取了一些灵感，现在人们普遍认为，1976年夏天Ramones乐队在英国的短暂巡演是许多乐队诞生的催化剂。朋克音乐在英国首次成为一种文化现象，对人们而言，它的意义远不止是一种音乐流派。
The Damned的《New Rose》可以说是第一首真正的英国朋克单曲，最后以1979年12月The Clash的经典单曲《London Calling》结尾。到了1980年，基本上可以认为第一波浪潮已经结束：最初的朋克声音不再突出，取而代之的是Oi!和无政府主义朋克（ Anarcho-Punk）、更“艺术化”的后朋克（Post-Punk）以及更流行化的新浪潮（ New Wave）。
